In an era of rapid digital and global transformation, a critical question arises:
How can ancient cultural heritage be experienced, reinterpreted, and sustained in modern contexts?
This exhibition presents the outcomes of a series of service design workshops conducted as part of the doctoral research titled “Service Design and Experience Economy for Sustainable Tourism Development in Dunhuang.”
The workshops brought together participants from cultural industries, tourism management, and user experience design. Using a co-creative approach grounded in service design thinking, participants explored how Dunhuang’s cultural symbols, site-specific environments, and visitor behaviors could inspire more sustainable and engaging tourism service innovations.
Through structured stages—Observation, Insight, Ideation, Prototyping, and Testing—the workshops produced immersive service prototypes, visitor journey maps, and experiential concepts rooted in the cultural depth of Dunhuang.
This exhibition showcases these outputs, ranging from Mogao mural-inspired design sketches, to Silk Road narrative experiences, to interactive visitor prototypes. We hope these collaborative efforts not only contribute to Dunhuang’s cultural tourism transformation, but also open up new paradigms for engaging with heritage through modern design and experience economies.
